The Arrecife City Council, through the Department of the Environment, directed by Carmen Delgado, promotes once again this year among the school population of the municipality, knowledge about the capital's marine environment through different routes along the coastline that "in the present academic year have as their main focus the sighting of birds".
Guided by the technician in Education and Environmental Control, Gustavo Tejera, the students of the different educational centers are getting to know the different species of migratory birds as residents. According to the councilor, "the main objectives of the activity are: to make the school population aware of the main species of birds that we can observe in the Arrecife Marina, to highlight the importance of the Marina as a possible site of scientific interest, to value different environmental aspects of the area, highlighting other groups of fauna and underwater flora and to instill the protection and conservation of the same".
Thus, with binoculars and bird templates for identification and with games and questions, Gustavo Tejera manages in each of the outings, that the boys and girls of Arrecife know and try to identify species of birds and that they can recognize their main characteristics.
Tour of the Marina
According to reports from the Consistory, the tours, previously arranged with each participating school, begin early in the morning, at the entrance of the Puente de las Bolas. At the beginning of the activity, a small introductory talk is given about the Arrecife Marina and then the activity begins.
The next stop is on the esplanade of the Castillo de San Gabriel, where most of the activity takes place, depending on the species and numbers of birds and continues towards the water tank located in the Muelle Chico overlooking the Juan Rejón reef.
The activity lasts about two hours and several groups from the Benito Méndez Tarajano and Adolfo Topham schools have already participated in it.
