The Arrecife City Council has joined the commemoration of International Women's Day, which is celebrated every year on March 8. In this 2021, given the situation due to the pandemic, the central activity of the Arrecife Equality Area will focus on a talk of reflection and analysis on the roles, stereotypes and mandates assumed by women throughout history, which will take place this Tuesday the 9th, at 7:00 p.m.
The Department of Social Services, Equality and Immigration of the Arrecife City Council, under the direction of the councilor and spokesperson for the PP group in the Consistory, María Jesús Tovar, has promoted this online talk, to try to reach the population "in a different and safe way." It will be given by the lawyer, writer and expert María S. Martín Barranco, specialist in social intervention with a gender focus and in inclusive language.
The councilor invites citizens to participate in the talk which, under the title "Women, self-care and self-esteem: the pending conversation", will take place through the Zoom platform this Tuesday, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. Anyone who wishes can participate in it, without prior registration.
The Arrecife City Council has displayed a banner remembering 8M on the main facade of the Town Hall and has organized this action of reflection and training, action on how the influence of patriarchy has been on women's self-care, the way in which language influences women's self-esteem and empowerment. Similarly, Martín Barranco will address how stereotypes, roles and mandates assumed influence women's physical and emotional health.
As detailed by the Consistory, María Martín Barranco is a specialist in social intervention with a gender focus and in inclusive language and is also the author of two books: 'Neither please nor por favora, how to speak with inclusive language without it being (too) noticeable', published in 2019 and 'Woman you had to be, the construction of the feminine through language, from 2020', both from the Catarata publishing house.
María Martín Barranco has a degree in Law and is the founder of the Virtual School of Feminist Empowerment (EVEFem) and advises several institutions and companies on equality, including the ICI, the Canary Institute of Equality.
