David García's work "Tribal Piñata" was the winner among the 10 presented.

Arrecife already has an announcing poster for the 2017 Carnival

'A Tribal Piñata' will be the symbol of the Arrecife Carnival 2017. An abstract work that hides the most outstanding symbology of the capital of Lanzarote. The poster, by the artist David García, was presented this Friday morning in the Plenary Hall of the Arrecife City Council with the presence of the mayor of the municipality Eva de Anta, the Councilor for Festivities David Duarte and the author of the work, David García.

'Tribal Piñata', inspired by Piñata Sunday in the Parranda Marinera de Los Buches, will promote the Arrecife Carnival events on billboards, posters and social networks.

The work of David García, a native of Arrecife, was chosen at a meeting held on Thursday under the responsibility of a specialized jury that included the writer and cultural manager Felix Martín Hormiga, the plastic artist Rosa Vera, the director of the Pancho Lasso Art School, Manuel Perdomo and the director of the MIAC María José Alcántara.

The mayor of Arrecife Eva de Anta highlighted "the participation of the artists and the imagination and creative point that David García has put on a poster that symbolizes the Carnival of our city".

For his part, Councilor David Duarte thanked "that the winning work is a faithful invitation to our Carnival, also thank the jury for their collaboration"

The author of the work, David García, expressed his gratitude and stated that "it is inspired by my childhood, in those piñata Sundays that I wanted to capture in 'Tribal Piñata'. It is a way of vindicating the Carnival as a family and remembering those piñatas full of gofio and flour."

The winning piece is a handmade drawing and consists of two chromatic parts, one represents the Day Carnival and the other the Burial of the Sardine. 'Tribal Piñata' brings together the most significant architectural elements of the city disguised with symbols from different Tribes of the World. The author invites you to "discover the natural, ethnographic and cultural elements that are hidden in the poster that, in addition to being a piñata, is a mask."

After winning in the selection process, its author will receive the amount of 1100 euros, the only prize established in this contest. In choosing the poster, the jury took into account, in addition to other artistic criteria, the fact that the work transmitted the allegory of the Carnival, in this case 'The Tribes of the World'.

A total of 10 works from different points of the island's geography were presented to the 2017 Carnival Poster Contest.

The Arrecife Carnival 2017 will be held from February 18 to March 1.
