Airport security guards could go on strike if they continue not being paid

The airport situation could get a little more complicated. Now it is the guards of the airbase who are studying the possibility of starting a strike. The main reason that would lead them to strike is that the company to which they belong does not pay the full salary corresponding to the workers since they are owed overtime, various bonuses and the company also threatens to remove more bonuses.

Faced with the problem, the employees, who constitute a staff of about 70 guards, have gone to claim to the legal office of the Unión Sindical Obrera. Although for the moment the only thing they can do is prepare the lawsuits because August is a practically non-working month. They have also decided to make their situation public. In this way, they hope to solve the serious problem they face. If they do not achieve their goal, they would go on strike.

History

In January there was a change of concession of the surveillance company at the Lanzarote airport. The new awarding company is Avinsa. However, subrogated the same rights and bonuses that they have since they are in charge of this service, they fail to comply with the regulations of the agreement "which is to respect us workers, we were going with the previous company because they have subrogated us in equal conditions and it is signed", explained the workers' delegate, Manuel Madera, on Radio Lanzarote.

By not complying with this part of the agreement, the company, in addition to not paying the full salaries, does not comply with the law on prevention of occupational hazards, omits the union delegates by not providing them with information such as contracts or not providing them with the necessary uniform. As Manuel Madera explained, the first excuse they gave about the attire is that they were not given the winter one when they were in the Canary Islands "because short-sleeved shirts are enough, but with the summer this clothing is deteriorated after being used all winter and they have not given us new garments again".

In February, the Unión Sindical Obrera filed a complaint with the labor inspection in which a joint meeting was specified with a company representative where it was agreed to solve this problem. However, "the attitude of the company is not the ideal one because it still does not comply with the essential", explained David Perdomo, union delegate. After the meeting, the labor inspector set a date to fix the problems but only partially. In fact, some workers have still not been paid all the money they have been claiming since January.
