The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has launched a social media campaign to promote the use of 'ustedes' over 'vosotros' which is becoming widespread in the Canary Islands. The video has already accumulated over 500,000 views on Instagram.
Through a video that begins with "look how we have words that identify us... our way of saying things, but none like 'ustedes'", it is intended to protect the use of the Canarian dialect as a symbol of identity.
Because, as the campaign reflects, "the 'vosotros' doesn't sound natural." And it is that, especially among the new generations, there is a false belief that 'ustedes' is not prestigious or is something very old.
"'Ustedes' marks the line between who we are... we use it out of respect, but also for identity and memory," states the video, which shows typical Canarian costumes, instruments like the timple, typical gastronomy like chickpeas, or the maritime culture of the islands.
The campaign concludes by alluding to the fact that, if 'ustedes' disappears, "we don't lose a simple word, if we lose it, we renounce our island... an island that is ours, yours."
