The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center affiliated with the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has been accredited by the Ministry of Health for the training of resident internal physicians (MIR) in the specialty of General Surgery and Digestive System.

This new accreditation is added to those already granted to the center in the specialties of Family and Community Medicine, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, Traumatology, and Internal Medicine. Likewise, the hospital has accreditation for the training of resident internal nurses (EIR) in Family and Community Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Obstetrics-Gynecology (Midwives), and Geriatric Nursing.

The head of the Surgery department, Juan De Diego, celebrates the Ministry's decision and has pointed out that "accreditation for teaching in resident training represents a significant advance for the department and for the Hospital. In turn, he understands that it is the result of the effort and commitment of the entire team and represents a challenge that will allow the specialty to be enhanced and contribute to talent retention."

The training of specialists, a challenge

The training program for the specialty of General Surgery and Digestive System aims to train competent, responsible specialists capable of the autonomous practice of the specialty. It is a theoretical-practical learning stage, in which residents acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes under the supervision and guidance of accredited specialists.

To obtain this certification, the Surgery department of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has had to prove compliance with the requirements demanded by the Ministry of Health regarding human resources, infrastructure, and equipment, as well as those related to healthcare, teaching, and research activities.

In this context, it should be noted that the Molina Orosa has recently incorporated the Da Vinci robotic surgery system, operational since last September, which places the center at the highest levels of state-of-the-art surgical equipment and reinforces its appeal as a teaching hospital for resident training.

The surgery team underlines the responsibility that comes with training future specialists, a teaching task that constitutes a challenge for the hospital team that must make an effort in activities such as documentation and review of protocols, clinical guidelines, articles of interest, research and publications, and attendance at conferences, which undoubtedly contribute to the improvement of the hospital's care quality.

For her part, the head of studies of the Management, Verónica Gutiérrez, considers that "this accreditation is excellent news for the center, it means the growth of specialized health training in our Hospital and improves training opportunities for residents".

It should be noted that currently a total of 70 residents from the different accredited specialties are training in the health centers and hospitals of the Lanzarote Management.
