The hall of the Arrecife City Council hosts from this Tuesday and, in principle, until the month of December, an exhibition of models carved in solid stone, which represent four of the most emblematic spaces of the capital. This is an exhibition, organized by the Department of Seniors, directed by Rosmen Quevedo and promoted by the first deputy mayor, Echedey Eugenio, to fulfill the desire of the artisans María del Carmen Batista Hernández and Nicolás De León Fariña and give visibility to a whole story of life experience, crafts and tradition.
These in-laws of 70 years of age, linked to the neighborhood of Maneje, decided, more than five years ago, to choose some of the most representative symbols of Arrecife and began to shape them. First was the Puente de Las Bolas and after it came the Castillo de San José, the Municipal Recova of the 40s and the Church of San Ginés when it only had two doors.
Four Arrecife icons that today can be enjoyed as they were in their time thanks to the work of two people who became artisans almost by chance, as they themselves say. "The research and the search for detail has led them to dedicate a large part of their lives to preserving and transmitting the heritage and architecture of the capital of Lanzarote, immortalizing and recreating with exactitude each of our icons," said Eugenio, who stresses that "we learned of this great work during the celebration of the Maneje festivities and together with our colleague Rosmen Quevedo we have managed to make it finally see the light and that both residents and tourists can contemplate and enjoy the true traditional craftsmanship."
For his part, the head of the Senior Area of the capital, Rosmen Quevedo, encourages the population to come to the Town Hall and "contemplate every detail of the models" that are part of an exhibition, which is born as recognition "not only to the great craftsmanship of María del Carmen and Nicolás", but "to all those people who are living witnesses of the history of our capital".
"Surely this exhibition will bring back many memories to all those elderly people in the municipality who knew, for example, the old municipal Recova," said Quevedo. Throughout their career María del Carmen and Nicolás have also worked, among others, in the creation of Canarian balconies, finely crafted details that adorn and enrich the local architecture.
