Dozens of people gathered on Saturday the 13th in Plaza de Las Palmas, in Arrecife, for a new Oral Cancer Prevention Day, organized by the College of Dentists of Las Palmas.
Throughout the morning, dentists Juliana Cassol Spanemberg, Marina Martín Sales, Juan Luis Mejías Torrus, and Ana Yu Martins offered information and performed free oral mucosa check-ups.
Many of the attendees were able to resolve doubts and rule out signs that had been worrying them, while in other cases, indications and lesions were identified that will require follow-up, which highlights the importance of these types of initiatives and preventive actions.
Oral cancer can develop on the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate, or the inside of the cheeks. One of its main risks is that, initially, it can go unnoticed as it does not cause significant pain or discomfort. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to any persistent changes in the mouth, such as ulcers that do not heal, white or reddish spots, lumps, or difficulty chewing or swallowing.
This direct action with the public aims to raise awareness about this type of cancer and facilitate its diagnosis in the earliest stages, when the chances of treatment and survival are significantly higher.
The activity served to remind citizens of the need to visit the dentist at least once a year, as regular dental check-ups are an essential tool for early detection of oral cancer and other oral cavity pathologies that affect the mouth, general health, and quality of life.
