The Hematology and Hemotherapy service and the Nursing management of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, have implemented the figure of the blood donation promoter with the aim of increasing the participation of citizens and professionals of the health center in blood donation.
This task has been carried out for a month by a warden of the center, a regular donor for 39 years, who has received specific training from the General Directorate of Blood Donation and Hemotherapy, which collaborates closely with the initiative.
The head of the Hematology service, Yapci Ramos, points out that, since the beginning of this activity, the number of donations has doubled in the hospital's blood bank, which demonstrates the positive impact of her work. "She has managed to convey that blood donation saves lives and has been able to reach both users and professionals, motivating them to go to the blood bank," she said.
In 2024, the blood bank at the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital registered 590 donations. With the implementation of this figure, this number is expected to increase significantly throughout the year.
Conscientize to donate
The promoter carries out her informative work in waiting rooms, outpatient clinics, and hospitalization areas, where she explains in a personalized way the importance of donating blood, the requirements to do so, and resolves common doubts among the population.
With informative material and direct contact, it invites citizens and center staff to donate at the hospital's blood bank, which is part of the Transfusion Blood Network of the Canary Islands. It also emphasizes that blood donation is an altruistic and safe act, subject to strict quality controls. It reminds that blood cannot be manufactured and that donating regularly is essential to guarantee the blood supply to patients who need it in the hospitals of the autonomous community.
The ultimate goal is to promote a culture of voluntary, responsible, and regular donation that ensures the availability of blood components throughout the year.
