Unions denounce an attack on an official of the Tahíche prison, who was repeatedly beaten by an inmate

The USO-ACAIP, CSI-CSIF, FSP-UGT and CCOO-Servicio a la ciudadanía union sections denounce the attack on an official at the Arrecife de Lanzarote Penitentiary Center. This is, according to the unions, the third incident "in which the physical integrity of an official is compromised"

The events took place on May 2, at 9:00 p.m., when a prison official was attacked by A.R.M., an inmate from module 4.

According to the unions, during the count, "the inmate insulted the official, who tried to calm him down." However, upon opening the cell, the inmate "pounced on the official, hitting him repeatedly." The rest of the officials came, after receiving notice, to the scene, where the inmate "continued to be aggressive, having to transfer him from the department to isolate the problem."

As a result of the attack, the official had abrasions on his arms, scratches and wounds on the fingers of his left hand, as well as various contusions.

The unions state that since last November there has been an "escalation of violent incidents". Among them, they cite another one that occurred in April, when another inmate threatened "a prison skewer" (homemade knife) to a female official", in addition to another incident starring two inmates "just a month ago, when another skewer appeared in the module next to the one where the events occurred."

All this, in the opinion of the unions, "is a reflection of the lack of officials and the concentration of all conflictive inmates in two departments."
