The Investigation and Analysis Group of the Traffic Subsector of the Civil Guard of Las Palmas (GIAT), in collaboration with the Arrecife Traffic Detachment, has completed several investigations initiated last month and related to the use by different people of fraudulent foreign driver's licenses.
The events began when a Patrol of the Arrecife Traffic Detachment intervened with the driver of a car, a 57-year-old resident of Arrecife, presenting an Italian national driver's license, which, however, aroused the suspicion of the agents, as it did not meet some of the characteristics of this type of document. The G.I.A.T. of the Subsector was informed, and the corresponding inquiries were initiated with the country of issuance of the document.
In the course of the investigation, it was learned that the driver had a conviction for deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles by court order from 2017. In those proceedings initiated by the Local Police of San Bartolomé, she had presented another Italian national driver's license while driving.
After verifying these facts and once the corresponding technical study of the permits was carried out, it was determined that they were false documents.
Similar events were detected last month when agents of the Arrecife Traffic Detachment, on the occasion of filing complaints for traffic safety violations against two foreign drivers residing on the island, proceeded to seize two driver's licenses, one from Portugal and one from Senegal, as they raised suspicions about their authenticity. Both documents were sent to the G.I.A.T. of the Traffic Subsector of Las Palmas, which, after the appropriate procedures with the authorities of these two countries and the police technical examination of the driver's licenses, determined that they were false documents.
To finalize the proceedings, G.I.A.T. personnel from Las Palmas traveled to Lanzarote on official duty, where they were able to locate the 57-year-old driver, a 43-year-old driver, and another 55-year-old, all residents of Arrecife de Lanzarote, on the 3rd of last month, proceeding to arrest them. Once they testified assisted by their respective lawyers, they were released with indications, handing over the proceedings instructed in the Investigating Court of Arrecife. These cases remain open, following the trail of the person or persons who carry out the preparation and distribution of the documents.
