"They have invented a history of abuse to justify strange fires"

MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar has accused his wife and her family environment this Wednesday of inventing a "history of abuse" to justify the "strange fires" registered in his home, when they were already living separately and he was in Madrid. "The police report explains that she was asleep and intoxicated when the Police arrived. To justify that, she and her sisters allege an episode of abuse. It is an injustice that is too lacerating," López Aguilar stated in statements collected by the EFE agency.

In his opinion, after these fires, the Prosecutor's Office for Minors "has an obligation to act" to protect the integrity of his two children. In fact, he has announced that he will appear so that the Prosecutor's Office investigates the safety conditions in which the children live. "It is evident that the custody of the minors is at stake," he stated, suggesting that this is the reason for the accusations made against him.

"It is not the profile of an abused woman"

López Aguilar has also maintained that the profile of his wife, from whom he has been in divorce proceedings for months, "does not fit the profile of an abused woman at all," which he considers to be that of "a woman who wants to break off a relationship but the man does not accept it." However, he assures that in this case it is "exactly the opposite," since he claims that it is his wife who resists ending the marriage. On the other hand, in reference to the interview granted this Tuesday by his wife, shortly after the news broke, López Aguilar added that declaring in Vanity Fair is also not "the profile of an abused woman."

Regarding some fights that several witnesses claim to have heard, López Aguilar admits that "discussions may have occurred," mainly related to the divorce process, but denies that there has been abuse. "This is the most painful thing that has happened to me in my life. I want to preserve my minor children, who deserve an honorable and innocent father, because they have one. I am going to fight for them," warned the MEP, who this Tuesday already assured that he had received threats from his wife and her environment as a result of the separation, in which they supposedly warned him that they were going to ruin his reputation.
