The Tedax of the Civil Guard of Lanzarote has carried out a controlled detonation on the dock of the island of La Graciosa, following the discovery of another projectile placed as an ornament on the door of a house on La Galera street.
The second device was half-buried in the esplanade of the La Graciosa dock, so, according to the security protocol between the Tedax of the Civil Guard and the Tedax of the Navy, which came in a warship from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, "a meticulous blasting with shaped charges" was carried out. For this, it was necessary to evacuate the entire dock and nearby establishments, as well as establish a security cordon of more than 150 meters.
In the first security explosion, the projectile's alote was shot out to sea. According to the Civil Guard, the device contained 14 kilos of TNT, "capable of destroying half of the La Graciosa dock and affecting the adjacent homes and facilities."
Another precedent a few days before
It so happens that in previous days, the GEDEX of the Civil Guard of Lanzarote proceeded to the removal of another large projectile that was located on La Gatera street in La Graciosa. The events were alerted to the Local Police by a citizen, so the area was immediately cordoned off and the Costa Teguise Civil Guard barracks were subsequently notified.
When the Special Explosives Deactivation Group arrived at the scene of the incident, with the collaboration of the local police, it was certified that it was a 550 millimeter long and 210 millimeter caliber howitzer, weighing about 60 kilograms, which was completely painted, so no legend or color of the body could be observed.
Due to the "great danger" that this type of ammunition can cause, since inside it can have up to 14 kilograms of explosive, it was decided to proceed with its transfer to an isolated area to carry out a controlled explosion. Once the device was moved outside the population center, all appropriate security measures were taken to proceed with its trepanation by means of a controlled explosion.
Inside this other projectile there was no explosive, although it is pointed out that with a load "it could cause lethal damage to several meters away.". According to the Civil Guard, this type of projectile was used by the Army and it could be the battery that was located in the Mirador del Río.
