The Documentoscopy Unit of the Local Police of Arrecife (UDOC) intervened at the end of May in about 300 counterfeit polo shirts of internationally renowned brands such as Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, U.S. Polo Assn, among others, as well as more than 2,000 false labels in order to be used in generic products to give them an appearance of authenticity.

According to the City Council, the intervention took place when the agents were carrying out a routine inspection of commercial activities on León y Castillo street, at which time they detected the anomalies in the aforementioned textile garments.

The Agents of the UDOC, with specific training in industrial property matters, inspected the textile products on display for sale, observing that they presented differences with respect to the original products, which could mislead a consumer with little expertise in the aforementioned brands. Likewise, during the inspection, more than 2,000 false labels as well as also false distinctive signs of said brands were located and seized.

An alleged crime against industrial property


Given the criminal nature of these events, the Local Police proceeded to initiate the appropriate proceedings for an alleged crime against industrial property against the owner of the commercial activity, a 38-year-old woman who responds to the initials of S.S. of 38 years of age, referring the police report together with the apocryphal articles seized to the Judicial Authority.

The Local Police of Arrecife recommends the acquisition of products only in recognized or trusted establishments. In addition, it appreciates and values citizen collaboration in case this type of counterfeit products are detected to safeguard the interests of the municipality's merchants and the rights of its visitors.
