The folklorist and former politician from Lanzarote, Florián Corujo, has passed away

He was a councilor for Culture and Youth for the PIL in the Arrecife City Council. He received the Silver Volcano of Acatife and the Silver Insignia of Guagime

Folklore artist and former politician from Lanzarote, Florián Corujo, dies

Florián Corujo has died of cancer this Thursday at the age of 67. Corujo has been a prominent figure both in the world of Lanzarote folklore and in the political sphere, since among other things he was councilor for the Independent Party of Lanzarote in the area of Culture and Youth of the Arrecife City Council. Born in the El Jable area of San Bartolomé, he is part of a prominent family within the traditional folklore of the island.

Father of the tenor Pancho Corujo, Florián was recognized by Acatife with the Silver Volcano. This award was presented to him by the president of the association, Juan Manuel Pérez Cabrera, at the celebration of the XXIII edition of his festival last July. Likewise, Corujo was recognized by Guagime, who distinguished him with the Silver Insignia, also in one of his folk contests in 2011.

Florián Corujo also worked as a music teacher and was a member of the Parranda Lanzarote, Beñesmén and the Tomaren Group; as well as the Rancho de Pascua de San Bartolomé. On the other hand, he made programs on television spreading the traditional culture of Lanzarote.

His son, the tenor Pancho Corujo, had planned a concert this Friday at the Teatro El Salinero, which has been canceled, according to the Cabildo de Lanzarote. The Lanzarote tenor was recognized in 2016 with the first prize in the Manhattan International Music Competition in New York. His other son, Ciro, is another magnificent soloist of Canarian folklore.

Florián Corujo is part of a saga of folklorists in Lanzarote. His older brother, Antonio, an excellent interpreter of the couplets of Víctor Fernández Gopar, while his other brother, Domingo, was the creator of the tail guitar. In addition, a large part of his family was part of the Agrupación Folclórica Ajey, which was the first created in his native San Bartolomé.

In the political facet he also coincided with his wife, Emilia Perdomo, who was a councilor for the PIL in the Arrecife City Council.
