The Arrecife Traffic Accident Investigation Team of the Civil Guard investigated on February 26 the driver of a bus that made "a dangerous overtaking maneuver with obvious risk to other users", during a journey on the LZ-2 between Arrecife and Playa Blanca. The image of the overtaking went viral on social networks and has helped the Civil Guard to clarify the facts.

As a result of the investigations, the Civil Guard managed to identify the driver, a 64-year-old man, who has been informed that he will be investigated as alleged perpetrator of a reckless driving offense, whose proceedings were delivered to the Court of Instruction number 4 of Arrecife. According to the current Penal Code, the crime of reckless driving is punishable by a prison sentence of six months to two years and deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for a period of more than one and up to six years.

The events took place on February 7, at kilometer 29.9 of the LZ-2 road, at the Repsol service station in the municipality of Yaiza (Las Palmas). According to the press release issued by the Civil Guard, the bus invaded the opposite direction to overtake the vehicle in front of it, forcing vehicles coming in the opposite direction to make risky evasive maneuvers to avoid a head-on collision.

Precisely, the events were recorded from one of those vehicles that was circulating in the opposite direction to the offending vehicle, which allowed a video record of the infraction to be made. After analyzing the disseminated images, agents of the Traffic Detachment of the Civil Guard of Arrecife proceeded to carry out the appropriate investigations to identify the driver and the vehicle, as well as to locate the place and date the moment of the commission of the events.

Citizen collaboration, in cases such as the one at hand, is facilitating the task of the Traffic Group as guarantors of road safety.
