The Civil Guard destroyed an artillery shell last Saturday in Yaiza. The artifact was found in the vicinity of Montaña Bermeja by a citizen, who notified the agents of the Yaiza post.
Civil Guard agents and their Special Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group immediately went to the scene. There they verified that it was an artillery shell, with a caliber of 105 millimeters, which had a high degree of oxidation, which leads agents to believe that the device could be five years old.
The Civil Guard decided to act at the site of the discovery due to "the poor state of conservation" of the projectile and "the consequent danger of its transport." Once the appropriate security measures were taken, the agents carried out a controlled detonation to destroy the device.
In the event of locating any unexploded military device, the Civil Guard recommends that citizens follow several tips for their safety. First, they emphasize that it is necessary to "not manipulate the device and prevent anyone from doing so", it is also advisable to "move away from the area where the explosive is located", as well as "immediately notify" the Civil Guard or the nearest security force and "signal the area and location of the explosive."
