The Lanzarote International Film Festival celebrates the thirty years of the Biosphere Reserves of Lanzarote

"The Lanzarote International Film Festival" will begin next Friday, May 5 with the invitation to Menorca to participate in the 'Made in Canarias & Menorca' section, which programs works filmed in the Archipelago and which on this occasion will also include "a selection of films made on the Balearic island", informs the Cabildo.

A celebration that coincides with the thirty years of Lanzarote and Menorca as sister islands in sustainability since their declaration as Biosphere Reserves in 1993.

Councilor Alberto Aguiar has expressed that "this is a unique opportunity to share cinematographic experiences in relation to the islander inhabitant condition, thus obtaining a broader view." Aguiar also reported that Menorcan cinema "arrives with a sample of four short films selected by the Menorca International Film Festival (FICME)." "The screenings will take place on Saturday, May 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the CIC El Almacén," he adds.

Among the works that the Lanzarote public will be able to enjoy is "the winner of the audience award at FICME last year, 'Un parell de cançons després' (2022)", they collect. The short film, directed by Jaume Carrió, tells the story of a transgressive urban artist who paints a mural of five hundred square meters. The short film vindicates the synergistic power of art and culture, they confirm.

"Lanzarote viewers will also be able to see the documentary 'S'altra banda' (2022) by Sònia Buj, focused on the legend of Pepe el Malo, a legendary character that is part of the children's imagination of the Menorcans," they confirm. Another of the short films by Balearic creators that will be screened is "a realistic drama by Miguel Ángel Marqués" that "recreates the first minutes of a sub-Saharan immigrant arriving on European coasts and which has accumulated several awards at different festivals," they point out.

Finally, it includes "the disturbing documentary "Bee or not to be" (2021), directed by Pau Enric Serra and Joan Bover. The film asks what a world without bees would be like, the animals that make possible the pollination necessary for 75 percent of the world's crops.

"Nine uninterrupted days of film screenings"

The German comedy 'Der Nachname' (The Last Name) will give "the starting signal" for nine uninterrupted days of screenings in Arrecife (Lanzarote), indicates the Cabildo. Its screening, which will be on Friday, May 5, at 8:30 p.m., in the Theater Hall of the Multicines Atlántida, which is the Spanish premiere of the film.

In addition, "Rendir los machos", by the Gran Canaria filmmaker David Pantaleón, will be screened on Saturday, May 6, at the CIC El Almacén, at 8:30 p.m., after the selection of Menorcan short films. The film's producer, Sebastián Álvarez, will introduce the screening and participate in a colloquium after the film, they advance.
