Last Thursday night, at 8:00 PM, the management of S.C.R.D. Torrelavega brought the 'Lanzarote and Peasant Culture' workshops to a close, a cycle that began on September 2nd and, over several weeks, offered exhibitions, concerts, conferences, talks, and round tables. Each of the activities had a notable public turnout, reflecting the interest in the island's cultural and human heritage.
For the closing, the Sociedad Torrelavega wanted to give it a special touch of Canarian identity and opted for the talent of brothers Ciro and Pancho Corujo, who presented the show "Los Corujo," their own production in which they were accompanied by four great musicians and friends: José Vicente Pérez (timple), Adrián Niz (guitar), Acorán Ramos (bass), and Genaro Pérez (percussion). They were joined by the special participation of Tharais Armas, who was in charge of weaving the biographical narrative of the Corujo family, a lineage from San Bartolomé deeply connected to Canarian musical traditions.
For such a special night, the Corujo brothers offered a journey through the most representative of island folklore: folias, seguidillas, isas, malagueñas, and a heartfelt sorondongo. There was also a nod to Latin American music, evoking the branch of the family that, in the sixties, emigrated from San Bartolomé (Lanzarote) to Venezuela in search of a better future. Emotion, memory, and identity thus intertwined in a show where the power of music once again demonstrated its ability to unite entire generations.
The most endearing surprise of the evening came with the appearance on stage of little "Cirito Corujo," only ten years old. With the timple in his hands and supported by all the musicians, especially by the complicit and proud gaze of his father, Ciro Corujo performed the first notes of a sorondongo to which he not only contributed music but also voice. His performance earned the longest and warmest ovation of the night, confirming that the Corujo lineage continues to grow with strength and talent.
Visibly moved, the president of the Torrelavega Society, Toñin Ramos, thanked the large audience, companies, and institutions on behalf of the Board of Directors for their support at each of the events, and took the opportunity to invite them all to the upcoming activities planned for the Christmas holidays.
Without a doubt, the show "Los Corujo," starring brothers Ciro and Pancho, with the accompanying team of musicians and the narration by Tharais Armas bringing the family history to life, became the perfect golden finale to a night marked by identity, feeling, and Canarian spirit.
