This week the Lanzarote International Film Festival kicks off, celebrating its 25th anniversary with the screening of more than 60 films. It includes international, national, documentary, animation and Canary Island films. 

The juries include actors such as Mina El Hamani, Miguel Ángel Muñoz and Rubén Cortada, Sergi López or María Esteve, among many others. 

In addition, the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC) joins the International Museum Day with special activities open to the public during the weekend. The agenda also includes music, theater and talks, such as the one held with Gemma Mengual in Los Jameos del Agua. 

 

CINEMA

 

  • International Film Festival 

The Lanzarote International Film Festival opens its doors to celebrate its 25th anniversary with the screening of more than 60 films. It includes international, national, documentary, animation and Canary Island films. 

Also workshops, non-competition screenings and some other surprises. 

Where: El Almacén, except for the screening and talk of the documentary 'Noah' which will be at the Teatro de San Bartolomé and the closing ceremony which will be held at El Salinero.

When: Between May 14 and 24.

ARTISTIC CREATION

 

  • Teleclub Lanzarote

As an integral part of the island's twelfth art biennial, Teleclub Lanzarote is an artistic training laboratory/workshop/residence. 

In its last day it offers an open training laboratory with Ale Acosta, Spanish producer and musician, founding member of Mojo Project and the Fuel Fandango project, together with Cristina Manjón, Nita. 

When: May 21 at 8:00 p.m.

Where: Teleclub El Islote.

  • Fixing the world of art

Artistic intervention on the occasion of International Museum Day. The artist Cristóbal Tabares will intervene live copies of universal works of art that, from his perspective, present aspects that can be improved. For this artistic action it is proposed to reinterpret two famous paintings in the history of Spanish art: Saturn devouring his sons by Francisco de Goya and The old woman frying eggs by Diego Velázquez.

When: Sunday, May 18 at 12:00 noon.

Where: International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC).

 

MUSIC

 

  • Grand piano in Titerroy and Argana

The squares of Titerroy and Argana Alta will be filled with the sound of the grand piano, as well as the violin, clarinet or saxophone.

Divided into morning and afternoon sessions, the Classic Piano Day will last from 10 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. in Titerroy and from 12.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Argana Alta.

When: Saturday, May 16.

Where: Plaza de Argana Alta (12.30 to 19.00 hours) and Plaza de Titerroy (10.00 to 21.30 hours).

Free entrance.

 

  • Hugo Bolívar and Edwin García in concert

Concert by the countertenor specialized in early music, Hugo Bolívar, with Edwin García on the theorbo, a baroque instrument similar to the lute. 

The program includes works by 17th century composers such as Monteverdi, Kapsberger, Strozzi, Merula, Frescobaldi and Landi

When: Saturday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: El Fondeadero, Puerto del Carmen.

TALKS

 

  • Romana G. Brunnauer and Luz Gloria López

The artist Romana G. Brunnauer and the curator Luz Gloria López will talk about the creative process associated with the languages of abstraction, gestural painting, the incorporation of comics and image transfers, as plastic strategies of search and experimentation used in the Nueva Realidad 3.0 exhibition that is exhibited in El Almacén.

When: Friday, May 16, at 7:00 p.m.

Where: El Almacén

Free entrance. 

 

  • Fixing the world of art

A dialogue between the journalist Rubén Fernández-Costa O’dogherty and the artist Cristóbal Tabares. Topics such as the culture of cancellation, the separation between the work and the artist, or the quotation of certain pieces in the art market will be addressed.

Afterwards, there will be a tour of the museum in which the public will be able to interact with outstanding works from the collection.

  • Albino Crabs. Gemma Mengual

conversation with Gemma Mengual, a living legend of Spanish sport and a world reference in synchronized swimming, who stars in the first episode of Albino Crabs, the new series of conferences organized by the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of Lanzarote in collaboration with Mediaset España

When: Saturday, May 17 at 8:30 p.m.

Where: Auditorium of Jameos del Agua.

 

THEATER

 

  • The Marriage of Figaro

Theatrical comedy inspired by the 18th century French classic of almost homonymous name, but set in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the sixties during the Franco regime. 

The play talks about the abuse of power, the role of censorship or the empowerment of women, among other issues.

The new Captain General and his wife in charge of the Women's Section arrive in the Canary Islands to apply the rules of the dictatorship, while a theater company prepares a satirical cabaret about the regime.

When: Saturday, May 17 at 8:00 p.m.

Where: Teatro El Salinero.
