The Esperanza Spínola Poetry Contest closes the festivities in honor of the Virgen del Carmen in Teguise. Created in 1988, the contest has been rescued again this year. On Saturday afternoon at the Casa-Museo del Timple and presented by the councilor in charge of the library department, Sara Bermúdez, the jury's decision was announced.
This edition included the collaboration of Esaú Pérez, Miriam Hernández, language and literature teachers, and Pilar Hernández, an official of the Teguise City Council and a language and literature student. They had the difficult task of reading the 439 poems received from different parts of the world such as the United States, Latin American and European countries. After carrying out several screenings and unanimously, they selected the 10 finalists from which they chose the three winners of this edition.
Before announcing the names of the winning poems, the members of the Teguise Reading Club read seven of the 10 selected, leaving the three winners for the end, and it was the members of the jury who gave voice to them. Nélida Leal Rodríguez won first prize with "If I am to die" (Cádiz). The second prize, valued at 300 euros, went to the poem "The void you leave", by Maribel Romero Soler from Alicante. And the third prize, valued at 200 euros, went to the poem "Silence", by Pilar Merino Martínez from Madrid.
The event also featured the musical trio formed by Nazaret Cortez - Voice, Steven Ramírez and Julián Foronda - guitars. An afternoon where poetry and music went hand in hand until the moment that everyone present was eagerly awaiting to know the name of the winning poems and authors.
The act ended with words of thanks from councilor Sara Bermúdez encouraging all participants to participate in future editions and she announced the projects that are being carried out from the Libraries department to recover the "Ángel Guerra and Leandro Perdomo" contests.
