The Cabildo of Lanzarote is hosting the event Encounters and discussions with women in geology and the earth, as part of the Magma, Wind, and Water Conference. These talks are organized to mark the tenth anniversary of the Unesco Global Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago, with the aim of bringing the public closer to understanding the territory, its natural history, and the work of women scientists in its study and conservation.
Geopark advisor Samuel Martín highlighted that these meetings allow for a better understanding of Lanzarote's history and the importance of protecting its natural heritage, further emphasizing that the knowledge of "women scientists has been fundamental to research, interpret, and manage this legacy over the past decade".
The first session of the event began this Thursday, in the plenary hall of the Institution, with a presentation by geologist and CSIC Emergencies coordinator, Inés Galindo, titled How did the Geopark's IGLs Emerge?, in which she explained the volcanic and geomorphological processes that shaped the island's Geological Interest Sites (IGLs) and their value in preserving Lanzarote's natural memory.
Attendees also participate in a guided tour of several IHLs that today function as Centers of Art, Culture, and Tourism, including Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Jardín de Cactus, Castillo de San José, and Museo del Campesino, where specialists explained how geology, history, and human intervention combine in these unique spaces
Encounters and talks with women in geology and earth sciences continues in the Cabildo's assembly hall this Friday, November 28, with activities focused on the conservation and future of natural heritage, including the presentation of the book "Geological Treasures of Magma, Wind, and Water," and a round table where speakers will discuss the challenges of management, science, and environmental education in Lanzarote.
During these two days, this forum brings together the expert voices of Carmen Romero, Inés Galindo, Nieves Sánchez, Juana Vegas, Esther Martín, and Leticia Pacheco in conversations and reflections on the Geological Sites of Interest (LIG) of the Geopark and the book *Geological Treasures of Magma, Wind, and Water*, the result of years of collaboration with the Geopark. Public access to the auditorium - starting at 5:00 PM - is free until full capacity.
