La Villa de Teguise, candidate for ‘Best Cultural Village’ in the 'Village of the Year Awards'

For its election, popular votes have been opened until February 29

The Villa of Teguise

La Villa de Teguise, chosen in 2020 as one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Spain', is once again in luck because it has now been selected as a finalist in the second edition of the 'Village of the Year Awards', organized by Prensa Ibérica, in the category of 'Best Cultural Village'.

"We are very satisfied and proud that Teguise is recognized, once again, among all the towns of the Canary Islands and Spain, in this case, for the extraordinary historical, cultural, heritage and natural value it possesses," says the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque.

"Without a doubt, Teguise is not only one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and we have been recognized as such, but it also has an exceptional Historical Artistic Complex, and one of the best preserved in all of the Canary Islands," adds Duque, who encourages all citizens to "participate in the popular votes that have been launched so that, finally, Teguise wins the deserved award among the rest of the finalist towns".

The Councilor for Culture of the Teguise consistory, Javier Díaz, explains that "the objective of these awards, under the Prensa Ibérica seal, is to recognize and distinguish the effort made by public and private entities in favor of the progress of their municipalities, not only in terms of cultural wealth but also tourism and commitment to sustainability."

Voting until February 29

For the election of the 'Best Cultural Village of the Year', popular votes have been opened until February 29. Those interested in participating can do so for free through this link on the 'Best Village' website.

Anyone can participate, limiting participation to a single vote per person per day in each of the contest categories. Finally, the jury will choose the winner of each category, which will be the one that has obtained the most votes in the popular vote.

The cultural tradition of Teguise

Teguise was one of the first towns founded in the Canary Islands and became the capital of Lanzarote until 1852. Today it preserves a remarkable collection of buildings of great historical-artistic value, including the Castle of Santa Bárbara; the Spínola Palace, located in an 18th century manor house; the old church of Guadalupe; the convent of San Francisco and Santo Domingo; the House of the Marquis of Herrera y Rojas or the Casa Perdomo, among others.

In addition, Teguise has a great cultural tradition promoted by numerous folklore, music, theater and art groups and associations in general, which make the municipality a hotbed of culture and traditions, thus contributing to the identity of the municipality and ensuring that future generations keep it alive.
