The Prosecutor's Office requests eight years in prison for two Gambians accused of skippering a boat

The precarious vessel arrived in Lanzarote from the coasts of Morocco on April 19, 2023

The First Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas will try two Gambian citizens next Thursday in Gran Canaria accused of a crime against the rights of foreign citizens

According to the indictment of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the defendants A.T. and A.N. have been in pre-trial detention for this case since May 18, 2023. Both would have agreed "with other unidentified people" and "motivated by the desire for profit" would have charged "various amounts of money" to two migrants to transfer them from Morocco to the Canary Islands.

The boat in which they were traveling departed from the Alaouite country and arrived in Lanzarote on April 19, 2023, at 4:15 p.m. On board the precarious boat were 48 migrants. The Public Ministry argues that both "skippered" the boat.

The precarious vessel, as usual in these cases, "lacked any security system, as well as life jackets, food, water, thereby endangering" the migrants.

For this reason, the Public Prosecutor's Office requests eight years in prison for both, special disqualification for the right to passive suffrage during the term of the sentence and payment of costs.
