The Court orders the execution of the sentences of one of the main parts of the Unión case

Dimas Martín must enter prison to serve seven years of his sentence, and Antonio Machín eight years.

The Sixth Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas has demanded that the conviction sentences of one of the main parts of the Unión case be executed. This part judged the collection of illegal commissions in the Arrecife City Council in exchange for awards of work or favors in the collection for certain services.

Among those convicted is the former president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, founder of the Party of Independents of Lanzarote (PIL), Dimas Martín, who between 2007 and 2009 from prison was in charge of "managing" the collection of the aforementioned illegal commissions.

The sentence, now final, was ratified in September 2022 by the Supreme Court. In addition to Dimas Martín, Juan Rafael Arrocha, Carlos Francisco Sáenz, Ubaldo Becerra, Antonio Jerónimo Machín, Jesús Manuel Martín, Samuel Jesús Lemes, Manuel Gregorio Reina, Antonio Gómez Ruiz and Antonio Cárdenas Carrillo were also convicted.

In addition, the Provincial Court demanded that separate pieces be opened for the execution of the sentences imposed on each of the ten convicts.

Ten convicts

Regarding the convicted people, the former Councilor for Parks and Gardens of the Arrecife City Council Antonio Machín was sentenced to eight years and one day in prison, 18 years of disqualification and a fine of 95,000 euros.

In this case, Dimas Martín was declared the "true manager" of the corruption plot and was sentenced to seven years and five months in prison, 22 of disqualification, as well as a fine of 4,200 euros and another of 219,000 euros.

The former councilor of the Party of Independents of Lanzarote (PIL) Ubaldo Becerra was imposed four years and two months in prison, as well as a fine of 70,900 euros and the return of the embezzled money. By collaborating with justice and confessing the crime, he received a reduction in the sentence.

Carlos Sáenz, convicted on several occasions, received three and a half years in prison and absolute disqualification for five years, as well as returning 129,985 euros to the City Council. While Rafael Arrocha and Antonio Cárdenes were only imposed an economic penalty.

One of the accused businessmen, Manuel Gregorio Reina Fabre, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. While for the businessmen Antonio Gómez, Jesús Manuel Martín and Samuel Lemes the prison sentence is less than two years.

Likewise, those sentenced to less than two years in prison may avoid prison. While those sentenced to more than two years have a period of five days from when the requirement is made to enter prison.
