The Arrecife Maritime-Fishing Institute starts the new course with a specialized academic offer and a growing number of students interested in training in the maritime sector and with various projects and improvements underway.
Specifically, photovoltaic systems will be installed in the commonly known as Fishing School to improve the energy efficiency of the center. Improvement works will also be carried out on the esplanade of the dock and, in the training field, a maritime radio communications simulator will be acquired.
Its director, Carmen Déniz, has indicated in relation to the photovoltaic installation that the investment and the commitment made aims to "make a much more sustainable academic center". In addition, she highlights that the implementation of said installation will reduce the energy costs of the center.
Specialized academic offer and growing demand
In reference to the academic field, the center offers several specialties among which are the degrees of higher technician in aquaculture, organization of maintenance of ship machinery, maritime transport and diving operations. These specializations have a wide claim, even accumulating more than 100 students on the waiting list, as in the case of the machinery training cycle. According to Déniz, a large part of the graduates are quickly located in companies in the fishing sector.
In addition to the degrees, the Maritime-Fishing Institute has training for those adults who want to work at sea and do not have the necessary qualifications. Among these options are multi-purpose coastal skipper, local fishing skipper and fishing sailor skipper.
Innovation and modernization in training centers
Alicia Vanoostende, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, highlights the commitment to innovation and modernization necessary to face the new challenges of the sector in the islands, as in the case of the development of Dual Vocational Training. "This novel modality offers the possibility of bringing students closer to the labor market and feeling to a greater extent the needs of their profession," said the Minister.
The Agricultural Training Schools and the Maritime Fishing Institutes of the Canary Islands have experienced a considerable growth in the student body, exceeding the number of 650 students enrolled for the following course.
