The Cabildo of Lanzarote reported this Thursday that it has received official confirmation of UNESCO sponsorship for the Congress for the Adoption of the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism +30, which will be held tomorrow at Jameos del Agua.
In a statement, it explained that the letter, signed by UNESCO Deputy Director-General Xing Qu, "recognizes the value of the meeting and authorizes the use of the emblem of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization".
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has celebrated this news "as an unequivocal endorsement of the work Lanzarote has done to place sustainability at the center of its tourism model".
According to the letter sent by Unesco, the Congress constitutes "a valuable platform for interdisciplinary dialogue on the integration of cultural heritage, biodiversity conservation, and sustainability" and aligns with key programs of the Organization, such as the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the objectives of Agenda 2030In Unesco's opinion, the meeting in Lanzarote "will strengthen environmental resilience, support community-led conservation efforts, and contribute to the international debate on sustainability through knowledge exchange," the Cabildo has indicated
The Cabildo of Lanzarote, in coordination with the Institute of Responsible Tourism (RTI), will host representatives of international institutions, academics, experts, and multilateral organizations tomorrow at Jameos del Agua, who will sign the new document, thirty years after the first World Charter for Sustainable Tourism signed on the island in 1995.
