The island of Lanzarote increased its volume of tourist sales abroad by 31.5% during the second quarter of the year compared to the same period of 2019 and did so through higher spending at the destination and an increase in overnight stays, without a significant increase in affluence.

In fact, arrivals of foreigners between April and June amounted to 641,970 people this year, when in the same period of 2019 they were 612,802, that is, an increase of 4.5%.

Lanzarote is thus one of the Spanish destinations whose tourist establishments achieved a greater increase in their business volume compared to 2019. Only the Balearic Islands, the Costa del Sol, in Andalusia, and the Garraf coast, in Catalonia, recorded better results.

Twice the Canary Islands average

The average growth in foreign sales in the Canary Islands was 17.5%, while in Spain it was 12.7% between April and June compared to the same period in 2019.

This growth is based on the strong increase in spending at the destination, with an average increase in Spain of 19% between March and May 2023 compared to the same pre-pandemic period.

Also to the increase in prices, which was 15.2% nationwide, linked to the transfer of costs and the provision in certain destinations of a renewed product, which has allowed attracting profiles of tourists with greater economic contribution with an increase in the nominal average daily income of 14.0%, although -1.2% adjusted for inflation.

The growth in the average stay of tourists by 4.2% in Spain is due to the combination of the increase in the leisure offer, the recovery of events, the arrival of tourists from long-distance markets and the gradual increase in transport costs, which induces to amortize them with a longer stay in the destination.
