A magazine specialized in tourism chooses a beach in La Graciosa among the best in Spain

This recognition comes amid the debate on mass tourism in the Canary Islands and at a time of constant growth of visitors to the eighth island

The international magazine specializing in luxury tourism Condé Nast Traveler has chosen a beach in La Graciosa to be nominated as the Best Beach in Spain 2026, among beaches from various autonomous communities.

It is Las Conchas beach, a virgin beach 610 meters long located in the northwest of La Graciosa, classified as dangerous. In this natural space, caution is recommended when swimming due to currents, and it does not have a lifeguard service. This beach competed alongside other coastal areas in the Canary Islands.

Among them, two urban beaches in Tenerife (Las Teresitas) and Gran Canaria (Las Canteras), as well as against other natural beaches in the archipelago: in La Palma (Nogales), in El Hierro (El Verodal), and in Fuerteventura (Piedra Playa). Finally, Las Conchas beach was chosen among the Canary Islands.

On this occasion, Las Conchas beach is nominated alongside nine other Spanish beaches to receive the award for best beach. Among them, Bolonia beach (Cádiz), Ses Illetes (Formentera), Los Locos beach (Cantabria), Illa Roja Beach (Girona), Playa Norte (Castellón), As Catedras beach (Lugo), Laida beach (Vizcaya), Poo beach (Asturias), or Calblanque (Cartagena).

Increasing tourist pressure on the eighth island

Amidst the debate on the tourist growth of the Canary Islands, tourist pressure on the eighth island continues to grow. In fact, a report by the Energy Community El Sol de La Graciosa already warned in 2024 that the increase in visitor arrivals to this fragile space "systematically" exceeds the capacity to respond to the growing demand for water and energy in the area.

On the other hand, the beaches in the north of La Graciosa are usually dangerous areas for swimming. Two years ago, the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands already sentenced the Teguise City Council for the death of a citizen who died on Lambra beach, a beach near Las Conchas, located in the northeast of the island, for failing to inform of its danger and not having flags or signs warning of the rough sea conditions.
