An insufficient budget has forced the rejection of nearly three out of ten applications to access rental aid published by the Government of the Canary Islands and co-financed between the State and the autonomous community. This is stated by the regional Executive, which published the resolution of the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI) on December 31.
In total, for the years 2024 and 2025, the subsidy amounts to 37.4 million euros. Of the total, the Canary Islands Executive contributed 8.6 million euros, compared to 28.7 million from the Government of Spain. In addition, the Canary Islands reduced its contribution for 2025 by almost one million euros compared to the previous year.
In total, throughout the archipelago, a total of 5,428 files are rejected due to exhaustion of credit, which have become part of the reserve list. Meanwhile, of the more than 19,109 applications submitted, only four out of ten were resolved favorably.
A reader has contacted La Voz to denounce the "insufficient budget" of these aids. Thus, he has highlighted that the "insufficient budgetary allocation" leaves "more than five thousand families without any support in one of the most strained communities with the most skyrocketing rental prices."
In addition, he has highlighted that "our rulers fill their mouths talking about the housing problem, but not only do they seem incapable of reaching long-term structural agreements, but they are also not willing to effectively alleviate the hardships that a large part of the citizens go through to access decent housing."
