Unemployment increases by 185 people in Lanzarote in January

Unemployment grew more among women and young people, although most of the island's unemployed are over 45 years old

Unemployment has increased in Lanzarote during the first month of 2024 by 185 people compared to December, which is equivalent to 2.3%. Thus, the total number of unemployed on the island exceeds the barrier of 8,000 again, with 8,108 unemployed people.

Despite the increase in unemployment this month, the figures are still much better than those shown in the balance of January 2023, when 610 jobs were lost on the island. 12 months ago there were 13.1% more unemployed, amounting to 9,327 people.

 

Unemployment grows more among women and young people

By sex, the first month of 2024 has seen a greater increase in unemployment among women (2.6%) than among men (2%). The total number of women in unemployment on the island amounts to 4,595 people, while the number of unemployed men is 3,513 people.

By age, unemployment increases more among the youngest (9.9%), although the total number of unemployed under 25 is low, at 389 people.

The increase in unemployment has been 5% among those aged between 25 and 44, up to a total of 2,880 unemployed people.

The growth in unemployment has been much lower for those over 45 years of age. In this age range, unemployment only increased by 0.3%, but it encompasses the majority of the island's unemployed with a total of 4,839 people.

 

Unemployment increases in all municipalities, Yaiza, where most, San Bartolomé, where least

In absolute numbers, Arrecife was the municipality that added the most unemployed during January. There were 75 more people up to a total of 4,108 unemployed. However, the capital has 11.2% fewer unemployed than twelve months ago.

With an increase of 6.4%, Yaiza was the Lanzarote municipality where unemployment grew the most in relative terms. The percentage is equivalent to 37 more people on the unemployment lists. Compared to a year ago, the southern municipality has 11.2% fewer people unemployed.

In Tías, unemployment increased by 3.3% compared to the previous month, which is equivalent to 27 more people up to a total of 851 unemployed. However, Tías is the municipality of Lanzarote that still accumulates the largest percentage decrease in unemployment in the last twelve months (-15.2%).

Tinajo saw its unemployment figures increase in January by 15 people up to a total of 333 unemployed. This is an increase of 4.7% compared to the previous month. In the last twelve months, Tinajo still accumulates a decrease in unemployment of 12.4%.

In Teguise, 22 more people registered on the unemployment lists, 2.3% more up to a total of 976 unemployed. Compared to twelve months ago, Teguise is the municipality of Lanzarote that has reduced unemployment the least in percentage terms, 9%.

The municipalities where the fewest jobs were lost were San Bartolomé, with 5 more unemployed up to a total of 909, and Haría, with 4 more people in unemployment up to a total of 312. In the whole of the last twelve months, San Bartolomé still accumulates a decrease in unemployment of 11.2% and Haría, of 11.9%.
