January started with 4,337 more unemployed in the Canary Islands, despite the good year-on-year data

It is the second autonomous community with the worst performance in the month, after Andalusia

The Canary Islands was the second autonomous community with the highest growth in the number of unemployed during the month of January 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, adding 4,337 more people. This figure is only surpassed by Andalusia, which registers 19,924 more people on the unemployment list, according to the 2/2022 labor market observatory of the CEOE.

The autonomous communities that achieved positive records in January were Valencia with 12,188 fewer unemployed, Madrid with a decrease of 9,750 unemployed, the Balearic Islands with 1,539 less and the Autonomous City of Melilla with 452 fewer unemployed.

Nationally, the number of unemployed increased by 17,173 people during the month of January 2022 compared to the previous month (+ 0.55%), according to the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

Regarding age groups, youth unemployment for those under 25 fell by 1.40% compared to the previous month, reaching the lowest number of young people registered in a month of January. Unemployment in this group has decreased by 38.5% during the last year, or what is the same, by 137,648 people.

By gender, there are 17,431 more unemployed women between January 2022 and December 2021, while the number of men decreases by 0.02%. Despite this, the number of unemployed women at present is the lowest figure since 2009, according to the ministry.

The sectors in which unemployment rose during January, in comparison with the previous month, were Services and Agriculture, with 1.54% and 1.83% more, respectively.

 

The year-on-year analysis, much more favorable

 

Analyzing the year-on-year data, unemployment decreased in all sectors of activity, highlighting Services with 577,132 fewer people. On the other side of the coin, there is the agricultural sector, which lost 37,167 employees.

1,596,332 more contracts have been registered in January than in the same month of the previous year, which represents a year-on-year increase of 22.57%. 85% are temporary contracts (1,348,712), while 15% are permanent and, to a lesser extent, training contracts also grow (8,948).
