The expansion works of the port of Playa Blanca, executed by the Canary Islands Ports Authority, which depends on the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, are entering their final stretch and the businessmen of the municipality of Yaiza are confident that "the improvement works of the port area will reactivate the economic activity".
Businesses await the completion of the works so that tourism and commercial activity returns to normal or, even, the greater capacity of the port allows improvement and economic growth occurs in all sectors.
The director of the Association of Merchants, Hoteliers and Entrepreneurs of Yaiza (ACHEDY), Cristina Gallego, considers it “a priority” that the new accesses to the port be completed so that tourists, regular users and residents can transit more comfortably through the area and have good accessibility to the commercial area. In addition, she affirms that it is “very important” that the new maritime terminal be launched, which will attract a greater number of visitors.
"One of the milestones of this expansion, which is 85% co-financed within the framework of the Canary Islands ERDF Operational Program (2014-2020), has been that it has never ceased to be operational," they highlight from Puertos Canarios. Despite the works, the operations of the shipping companies Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas have continued normally, despite the transfer to the new dock, which “has been very good news because business activity has been kept alive”, adds Cristina Gallego.
For his part, the managing director of Puertos Canarios, Manuel Ortega, affirms that in the coming months "all these requests made by the business community of Yaiza will be resolved." “We are working daily to ensure that all services are ready with the aim that this new port, in addition to improving connectivity between the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, will give an important boost to the tourist and commercial activity of Playa Blanca.”
