The Governing Council of the Cabildo de Lanzarote has approved the definitive resolution of the new subsidies for pit cultivation, a pioneering aid initiative promoted by the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, headed by the island's president, Oswaldo Betancort, and representing a total investment of 627,116 euros for 342 beneficiaries, mostly individuals, although it also includes agricultural companies and wineries on the island.

These grants are aimed at the maintenance and improvement of the agrosystems in the La Geria wine-growing area, one of the most unique agricultural landscapes in the world and a symbol of Lanzarote's cultural and productive identity.

President Oswaldo Betancort has stated that "these aids represent a firm and decisive support for those who, generation after generation, have kept the cultivation in pits alive." Betancort has reiterated that "we are not just talking about figures, we are talking about people, farming families, smallholdings, but also wineries and companies that are committed to a sustainable production model deeply linked to Lanzarote."

The grants, corresponding to the 2025 annual period, are awarded on a non-competitive basis and have had a global budget of 800,000 euros, co-financed 50% by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Lanzarote within the framework of the Strategic Subsidy Plan 2023-2025.

The call responds to the Cabildo's commitment to the protection of the traditional agricultural landscape, support for heroic viticulture, and the improvement of vineyard productivity, while guaranteeing the economic viability of the farms and the continuity of an internationally recognized agricultural model.

The payment of the subsidies will be made once the beneficiaries justify the subsidized actions, in accordance with the provisions of the regulatory bases, with a maximum justification period set until February 28, 2026.
