The airline Iberia Express has exceeded 20 million passengers in the Canary Islands, after 12 years of operating in the archipelago during 130,000 flights. The airline has commemorated this milestone with an event held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Among them were the Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jessica de León, the Minister of Tourism of Gran Canaria, Carlos Álamo, and the Minister of Tourism of La Palma, Raquel Rebollo.
During the commemorative event, Carlos Gómez, CEO of Iberia Express, defended "the airline's commitment to the connectivity of the islands. Since our origins as a company, we have been committed to sustainable connectivity with the Canary Islands, offering a robust range of destinations and frequencies with Madrid, with schedules that cover all time slots and allow the best connections."
Gómez wanted to highlight the company's commitment to "facilitating travel for residents with excellent connectivity through Madrid to more than 100 international destinations around the world and with a punctuality that reached 88.8% on flights with the Canary Islands last year."
According to the data offered, of the more than 20 million passengers of Iberia Express, "a large majority are residents for whom Iberia Express has woven an air bridge between the Canary Islands and Madrid" and, from Madrid, with the whole world through the Iberia group's destination map in the USA, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
Iberia Express is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and, this year, half of its aircraft are already new generation, the most efficient of Airbus. Iberia Express operates 50% of its flights with the Canary Islands with A321Neo aircraft, the most advanced and sustainable Airbus model for short and medium-haul flights, with engines that are 50% quieter and reduce fuel consumption by 18% and CO2 emissions.
An air bridge with the Canary Islands for this summer
This summer, Iberia Express will operate almost an air bridge with the Canary Islands, increasing its operations and offering more than 2 million seats with the archipelago, which is 15% more capacity than in 2023 and almost 40% compared to 2019.
Specifically, during the summer season of 2024, which began in April and will extend until the end of October, Iberia Express will operate up to nine daily flights each way with Gran Canaria, up to 10 with Tenerife, up to three with Lanzarote, another two with Fuerteventura and up to two daily flights with La Palma.
In addition to this offer with the Canary Islands, there are the transversal routes between Oviedo-Tenerife and Vigo-Tenerife during June, July, August and September, with two weekly frequencies in the central months to favour the arrival of visitors to the islands from the northernmost area of the peninsula. The airline also offers connecting flights to more than 100 international destinations of the Iberia Group. Specifically, in 2023 more than 22% of Iberia Express customers on flights with the Canary Islands were connections with other cities in the USA, Latin America and Europe.
20 flights to enjoy until 2025
In addition, to celebrate these more than 20 million passengers with the Canary Islands, on flight I23832 this Thursday between Madrid and Gran Canaria, Iberia Express has surprised one of its customers with a great gift: 20 flights for the next 12 months, which they can enjoy with friends and family, and to travel to the nearly 30 destinations offered by the airline in Spain, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
Iberia Express is part of the Iberia Group, the leading low cost airline at Madrid airport and also on routes with the Canary and Balearic Islands. It offers short and medium-haul flights, both to feed Iberia's long-distance network and to compete efficiently in the low cost airline segment.
