The CEL highlights that almost 5,000 women work on their own account —16% of female employment— driven by advisory and training programs that strengthen entrepreneurship and the island's business fabric

The Business Confederation of Lanzarote (CEL) highlights the growth of female employment on the island, which exceeds the pace of the archipelago as a whole, and underlines the important role that CEL's support has played in promoting self-employment, through strategic advisory and training projects.

The report prepared by the CEL within the project ‘Employability Lanzarote 2025/2026’, indicates that in February 2026 there were 4,925 women self-employed, which represents 16% of female employment in Lanzarote, more than three points above the Canary Islands average. For the president of the CEL, Beatriz Salazar, “this data places the island as a benchmark in female entrepreneurship within the archipelago”.

The report reveals that the services sector concentrates the majority of female self-employment, with a 93.6% presence, compared to 91.6% in the Canary Islands as a whole. Among the activities where self-employed women stand out are: health and education (59%), textile industry, clothing and footwear (60%), research and development (67%), social services (90%) and water supply and waste management (100%).

Nevertheless, the majority of female self-employment is concentrated in commerce (21%), hospitality (16%) and other services (12%), summing between the three half of all RETA affiliations on the island.

Beatriz Salazar emphasizes that “although the data are positive, we must continue supporting women entrepreneurs through very effective tools such as training, advice, and access to financing, ensuring that their activity generates stable and sustainable employment”.

Thanks to initiatives such as Employability Lanzarote 2025/2026 and the Business Advisory Service (SAE), CEL offers both in-person and digital support, consolidating real employment opportunities, sustainable economic growth, and social well-being on the island.

“Lanzarote has a solid and dynamic business fabric, and it is fundamental that economic growth reaches all sectors, consolidating quality employment and fostering local talent”, highlights Salazar.

Lastly, the president emphasizes that the CEL continues to be a very important ally for SMEs, entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals who wish to start their business on the island, “so they can count on us to advise them and support their launch and growth with all the tools we have available for it.”
