The president of the Canary Islands Association of Travel Agencies and Tour Operators (ACAVyT), David Déniz, has confirmed to La Voz that they are working together with their Balearic counterparts to "ensure that the 75% bonus for island residents always includes hand luggage, which does not happen with certain low-cost airlines."
Déniz also laments that "some companies detect through their websites that the user is a resident and offer them higher fares, when they should offer the same service and the same options as any customer."
For his part, the president of the Business Association of Travel Agencies of the Balearic Islands (Aviba), Pedro Fiol, in statements to the Diario de Mallorca accused low-cost airlines of lack of transparency. "There is no clarity" on whether or not they apply the resident discount. "They speculate, they set variable prices depending on demand."
To solve this issue, "three weeks ago we met in Madrid with Civil Aviation and we conveyed these irregularities to them," explains Déniz.
According to their complaint, the airlines continue to bypass the regulations approved in December 2020, which establish that they cannot request the resident status until the end of the booking process. This guideline aims precisely to prevent them from inflating fares by taking advantage of the bonus.
