The Minister of Public Works and Transport of the Canary Islands Government, Sebastián Franquis, assured this Tuesday that the regional Executive maintains before the Ministry of Transport the intention to participate in the planning and management of the airports of the Canary Islands through the company AENA, although the privatization of 49% of the company "makes it difficult".

The counselor recalled after a question from the opposition in the Parliament of the Canary Islands that it is the current Government of the Canary Islands "the one that has seriously raised the participation of the Community in the board of directors of AENA":

In this way, Sebastián Franquis has recognized that the current composition of the company and the chosen business model makes it difficult to participate in the Board of Directors.

"AENA is a state-owned commercial company listed on the stock exchange, whose share capital is 51% owned by the State and 49% by private shareholders," the counselor recalled.

Franquis insisted that the current participation model through the Airport Coordination Committees is not the appropriate instrument to guarantee participation in the planning and programming and management of the Canary Islands airports.

"Therefore, we will continue to defend before the Ministry that the Canary Islands participate in the planning, programming and management of airports through its participation in the Board of Directors or by creating new management instruments that guarantee compliance with the provisions of article 161.2 of our Statute of Autonomy," Franquis concluded.
