More than 31% of Canary Island companies sell online, surpassing the European average, according to the eCanarias 2025 Report, prepared by the Canary Islands Observatory of Telecommunications and the Information Society (OCTSI) and published by the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI).

In this third installment, ACIISI focuses on breaking down the data from the Report of the Digital Society in the Canary Islands 2025 edition related to companies with more than 10 employees.

The study indicates that these companies in the Canary Islands show a high degree of basic digitization and consolidate their presence in electronic commerce, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on the use of ICT in the business sector.

99% of larger companies have computers and internet connection, and 96% have fixed broadband, figures practically identical to the national average. In addition, 83% access speeds above 100 Mbps, and 54% exceed 500 Mbps, confirming a solid connectivity infrastructure.

In electronic commerce, more than 31% of companies made online sales in 2023, equaling the national average and far exceeding the European average (24%). These digital sales represented 32% of their total turnover, a figure also higher than the state average.

Another notable advance is the growing use of cloud services: 31% of Canary Island companies pay for cloud solutions, mainly email, storage, databases, security software and office automation. The contracting of financial or accounting software, ERP and CRM is also growing.

In cybersecurity, 87% of companies apply measures such as external backups and secure authentication. Only 12% reported incidents in 2024, four points less than the national average.

The use of artificial intelligence in some specific areas also stands out: 6% of companies use it for language generation, workflow automation and decision support.

Lack of "digital talent" and more technology

Although Canary Island companies have achieved a practically universal basic digitization and maintain a prominent online sales activity, the incorporation of digital talent and the adoption of advanced technologies remain the main challenges to close the gap with the state and European average.

It should be remembered that the eCanarias 2025 Report offers a complete picture of the state of the Digital Society in the Canary Islands and the actions developed to promote it. In its eighteenth edition, the study analyzes the evolution of the Information Society during 2024, covering six key areas: households, companies, ICT sector, education, electronic administration and audiovisual media.

ACIISI is disseminating the main results of the report in a series of thematic installments.
