A German tour operator buys the Kontiki apartments and transforms them into a 4-star complex

The German tour operator Schauinsland Reisen has acquired the Kontiki apartment complex in Puerto del Carmen and will transform it into a four-star complex, which will open its doors "this coming summer" under the name R2 Bahía Kontiki, according to the Tías City Council.

The Consistory explains that the Department of Urban Planning issued a building permit last fall for the rehabilitation of this prominent tourist establishment in Puerto del Carmen, which will now have 235 tourist places in 108 accommodation units. The R2 Bahía Kontiki also received the mandatory tourism authorization issued by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, as highlighted by the City Council, which points out that "this complex is part of the new brand of this important German tour operator in Spain with its recent acquisitions in the Balearic Islands, Fuerteventura and now in Lanzarote, with the purchase of Kontiki closed last year".

The Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Tourism, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, accompanied by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Saray Rodríguez, recently visited the rehabilitation works of the R2 Bahía Kontiki. During the visit, they were accompanied by representatives of the property and by the staff of the company carrying out the rehabilitation of the complex, El Corte Inglés División Empresas.

Puerto del Carmen, "a good reference in the modernization of a destination"

The Councilor for Tourism of the Tías City Council, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, highlighted that this new rehabilitation represents "a good leap towards the quality and competitiveness of Puerto del Carmen as a tourist destination, which in 2017 became the main tourist area in Spain with the highest rates of accommodation occupancy". "The acquisition of a complex by a tour operator adds confidence in Puerto del Carmen and its relaunch as a tourist area with a good present and a good future where the quality of the destination is achieved, among other factors, by having tourist complexes rehabilitated and adapted to the new demands of tourists," he added.

For her part, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Saray Rodríguez, highlighted that "Puerto del Carmen is a good reference in the modernization of a mature tourist destination in the Canary Islands, where tourism companies, such as this important German tour operator, are committed to investing and increasing the quality and category of their accommodation product".
