The Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing is working on 20 projects to decarbonize and digitize the Canary Islands Archipelago with a budget of 46,315,589 euros, coming from the Next Generation EU Funds of the Government of Spain.
Of this transfer, a portion of 41 million euros will be allocated to the digital and sustainable transformation of public transport, promoting sustainable mobility in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants or provincial capitals, which concentrate more than 50% of the population.
Actions related to smaller municipalities that are adjacent or nearby will also be eligible, with at least one of them having more than 20,000 inhabitants. Likewise, financing is allowed on islands with more than 20,000 inhabitants that have public transport.
These funds have made it possible to launch 18 projects throughout the Canary Islands in the next four years, including the creation of bus-HOV lanes, the acquisition of sustainable buses, and the ITS digital transformation, within the framework of the Recovery, Mobility and Resilience Plan. The construction of the Mobility Control Center on the island of Gran Canaria is also contemplated, which will allow analyzing the transport service throughout the island.
The Ministry is working to close this batch of projects before December 2025, the deadline to promote digital and sustainable transformation in the Canary Islands.
On the other hand, the remaining batch, which amounts to 5 million euros, will be allocated to the digitization of autonomous transport to improve transport management systems on demand, integrated payment solutions or the implementation of automated administrative actions.
This will allow in the Canary Islands three lines of action the creation of the Registry of Road Transport operators in both capitals or the digitization of services and tasks of the administration.
This line of action has been divided by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda into two annuities, of which the Canary Islands already received a first installment and, now, the corresponding annuity will be made, finalizing this procedure. Specifically, the Ministry will be able to develop the projects until June 2026, finalizing the process of digitization of administrative and transport services on demand.
