I feel very fortunate because I like my profession

Born in Castellón, graduated in Medicine from the University of Seville, Dr. Carda completed his specialty in Neurosurgery at the Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander, a national university reference center, where he trained in pediatric and general neurosurgery, and then in neuroraquis (spine surgery), until he arrived in Lanzarote in 2010 to fill the only neurosurgeon position at the José Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote.

From a very young age, his vocation was clear, and since he started studying, he wanted to be a neurosurgeon and he achieved it through national opposition in Madrid, in a very difficult time. Among his merits, in addition to his 40 years of experience, are the Poble 2008 Award for his career, as well as his participation in various medical conferences, published works and his work as a tutor for residents and specialists from the Marqués de Valdecilla team.

"In recent years, I have solved very serious problems on the island"

José Ramón Carda believes that in recent years he has solved very serious problems, thanks to the coverage of neurosurgical emergencies, especially traumatic pathologies that previously required an urgent transfer to the reference center, the Doctor Negrín Hospital in Gran Canaria. In addition, he has taken charge of the interventions of multiple patients with back diseases.

As a medical professional, Carda considers that the greatest reward he has had in his life is when a patient tells him: "I am so happy, you have solved my problem, -that cannot be paid with money, and also in Lanzarote people are very grateful-", Carda declares when talking about his patients.

Among his neurosurgery operations are many cases of geriatric surgery, people over 75 years old, who have regained their mobility, and in some cases, after 3 months they have been able to walk up to 4 kilometers a day.

In this sense, "I feel like the luckiest man in the world, because I like my profession, especially surgery, and I have enjoyed it very much", confesses Dr. Carda during the interview, also making it clear that after his long experience and knowledge of medical practice in this country, and despite the fact that medical professionals are currently experiencing great frustration due to changes in healthcare systems, "Spain has the best trained medical specialists in the world".

Fortunately, his future as a neurosurgeon will continue in Lanzarote, because as he declares, "I feel very comfortable on the island doing what I do", and he will have the privilege of continuing his medical work at the San Vicente Surgical Medical Center, where he will join other specialists in general surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dentistry, urology and podiatry, among others.

His role at the San Vicente Medical Center in Arrecife will be to carry out a study, diagnosis and proposal for comprehensive treatment in the spine, in cervical surgery, spinal cord compressions, lumbar pathologies, herniated discs, etc. His purpose is to use minimally invasive surgery, use the most advanced means and always choose the best option for his patients, personalized attention and constant monitoring of their evolution in Lanzarote, where they can continue to be offered quality healthcare, at the level of the best centers in the Canary Islands.
