As it did in its day when incorporating vehicles for the disabled, being the first car rental company to echo an unmet need, on this occasion, and as part of its social commitment, the Canarian company has been the first in Spain to bet on the environment, promoting the use of clean and less polluting energies in its rental vehicle fleet.
The car rental company CICAR has decided to make a commitment to the future by incorporating into its extensive fleet the Opel Astras acquired from Orvecame, a company belonging to the same group, powered by autogas. This innovative system has been implemented as a test for its future expansion, and therefore examining new alternatives to those already existing for the renewal of its fleet.
Autogas is the common term used to refer to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used as fuel in automobiles. It is a mixture of butane and propane. It is worth noting the high level of safety of autogas and, in addition, it complies with all the regulations required of other fuels, and has no restrictions on its use.
On the other hand, and equally important, autogas improves air quality, especially in urban areas, since this fuel is capable of reducing NOx emissions by 68 percent and CO2 emissions by 15 percent compared to gasoline, and 96% of NOx emissions and 10% of CO2 emissions in the case of diesel or biodiesel.
Finally, a vehicle adapted to autogas doubles its autonomy by installing a second tank for LPG. The gasoline tank remains unchanged and the driver can use both fuels interchangeably, which, together with a reduction in cost, makes autogas a more economical alternative. On average, both in Spain and in Europe, the price of autogas is 50 percent cheaper than that of gasoline or diesel.
