Personnel from the Soria 9 Infantry Regiment, which belongs to the Canarias XVI brigade, will patrol on foot and in vehicles on the island of Lanzarote starting this Wednesday, March 8.

These tasks have as their purpose reinforce surveillance, exert a deterrent effect and guarantee security of the terrestrial spaces under national sovereignty on the islands.

These activities are integrated into the set of Permanent Operations, one of the main contributions of the Armed Forces (FAS) to National Security in times of peace. These missions underscore the commitment of the FAS to the integral defense of the territory and their capacity to anticipate any eventuality that could compromise stability.

The deployment not only allows for effective surveillance of the environment, but also facilitates a greater knowledge of the terrain and the social reality of the island. In addition, it promotes the integration of military personnel into the local community and consolidates the presence of the Armed Forces in the territory.

Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, head of the Canary Islands Command of the Army, also serves as Commander of the Terrestrial Operational Command (CMOT).

This position entails the responsibility of planning presence and surveillance operations not only in the Canary Islands, but also in Ceuta, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands, and of maintaining constant coordination with the competent civil and military authorities.
