Gran Canaria demands Clavijo "an equitable distribution" of migrant minors among all the islands

"The reception must be balanced to avoid problems and social rejection," Morales insisted, who indicates that the island hosts 3,500 unaccompanied foreign children and adolescents.

The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales (NC), has asked the Government of the Canary Islands to apply the same criteria that it demands from the State for the distribution of minor immigrants and distribute them equitably among the islands, since Gran Canaria hosts almost 60%.

Of the approximately 5,500 or 6,000 unaccompanied minor immigrants currently in the Canary Islands, 3,500 reside in centers in Gran Canaria, Morales pointed out, who believes that this is "an unbalanced and unfair situation." Meanwhile, for example, in Lanzarote there are only 200 migrant minors hosted.

The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria has assured that the island institution does not know the criteria that are applied for the distribution and has demanded that the Government be "absolutely transparent" in this regard.

In his opinion, criteria similar to those of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration could be applied, which take into account the population, the unemployment rate and other factors.

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria will present its position at the meeting that the island institutions have this Monday afternoon in Tenerife to address the issue and, although it is open to dialogue, it will ask that "the situation be corrected", Morales said.

In his opinion, "the poor management" of the migration crisis can create many problems if no action is taken, since "the reception centers are overwhelmed, there are no material or human resources, and in many things are improvised."

"There are many minors wandering the streets," denounced the president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, so a distribution with other autonomous communities is essential.

"The reception must be balanced to avoid problems and social rejection," Morales insisted, who trusts that the Government of the Canary Islands will alleviate the pressure suffered by the island of Gran Canaria due to this situation.
