The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has appointed the current national deputy, Elena Máñez, as Minister of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the regional government, replacing Carolina Darias, following her appointment as Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.
From the regional Executive, they highlight that Elena Máñez has "an extensive career linked to social justice, feminism and work for equality." She has been a councilor of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Government delegate and, currently, she is a national deputy after the general elections of April 2019.
Ángel Víctor Torres highlighted that "once again a woman will be in charge of an area as important as the Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment, which also includes a strategic area such as R&D&I." He highlighted that the new councilor is "a politician with an important career and insurance for the Government of the Canary Islands."
Elena Máñez has thanked the President of the Canary Islands for the trust placed in her "to be able to share this project of change and social progress." She assured that her appointment is "a great honor and I assume it with a great sense of responsibility because we are in a historic moment with a progressive Government in the Canary Islands after 26 years and a progressive Government in Madrid," she said. She also highlighted that she is taking over from a "great colleague, a great councilor and who will now be a great minister."
