The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Poli Suárez, will launch during this second term of the course a new service, made up of specialized teachers, for the management of grief and the prevention of suicide in the educational centers of the islands.
Managed through the General Directorate of Educational Planning, Inclusion and Innovation, coordinated by David Pablos, this service, which will be integrated by teachers with degrees in Psychology, will assist the educational community in situations of grief and advise the teaching teams involved in the application of the Intervention Protocol for suicidal risk in educational institutions of the Canary Islands. In addition, after its implementation, it will establish various collaborations with the Mental Health Area of the Ministry of Health.
In this way, Education establishes an organizational and functional measure that allows to respond effectively to the mental health demands of the educational centers of the archipelago, while giving continuity to the work developed for years by the Caterpillars and Colored Butterflies project in the desks of our school, promoted by the teacher Calixto Herrera, who, after receiving the Order of Civil Merit a few months ago, has gone on to collaborate in the care of migrant children of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families. His role at the head of the aforementioned project has served to lay the foundations for the new initiative.
Similarly, the recent publication of the Intervention Protocol for suicidal risk in educational institutions of the Canary Islands, the result of collaboration between the health, education and social sectors of the archipelago, poses a challenge for educational centers to meet the demands of a society that seeks answers.
