The Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis, admitted this Wednesday that a large part of the archipelago is a "stressed area" due to the increase in the price of rent and is in favor of the new government bill "providing mechanisms to the autonomous communities to regulate it".
In a press conference held in La Palma to present the single registry of those affected by the volcanic eruption, he specified that he does not yet know the text but an "advance", and what has transpired through the media, but he understands that it is in line with what has been debated "in recent times" to "put limits" on rising rents.
The councilor has stressed that "almost all of the Canary Islands is a stressed area due to the sustained increase in prices, especially in tourist areas and large cities", so he understands that if the State gives the autonomous communities tools, they will "use" them.
"The competition will be given to the autonomous communities and if we see that in certain areas of specific islands there is an abusive price of rent we will act", he pointed out, noting however that "the fundamental thing" to avoid sharp increases in the price of rent "is to increase the public housing stock". "It is the best solution," he said.
