The Ministry of Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security has held an institutional event this Saturday on the occasion of the Day in Memory of Stolen Minors and their families to remember the victims of these forced disappearances that occurred in the archipelago during the Franco dictatorship and the first years of democracy.
The Deputy Minister of Justice and Security, Cesáreo Rodríguez, recalled in a statement that this is the second year that the Canarian Executive has organized this recognition to give relevance to this group, in compliance with the provisions of Canarian Law 13/2019, of April 25, which regulates the right to identity and addresses cases of child abduction.
And he highlighted the creation in March of last year, as a result of that law, of the Commission for the Right to Identity of Stolen Children.
During the event, the Deputy Minister read a statement in which the Ministry "publicly recognizes the seriousness of the events linked to the abduction of newborns that occurred in the Canary Islands and expresses the Government's firm and unequivocal commitment to the people affected, both those who were abducted and their biological and adoptive families in good faith, expressing respect and solidarity with their prolonged search for the truth."
It undertakes to comply with the law on stolen minors
The Canarian Government has committed to promoting the effective compliance with the law on stolen minors in the islands and to clarifying the facts, the opening and preservation of archives and records, as well as promoting actions of moral and symbolic reparation within the framework of democratic memory policies, which contribute to dignifying the victims.
"This is about making visible and not forgetting a historical reality, guaranteeing and protecting the right to the truth, justice and reparation for the emotional damage that the victims have suffered for decades," Rodríguez said in the note, highlighting the need to "avoid confusion and misinformation."
During the event, a video by the artist Espe Pons was shown about the photographic project Cosmos, commissioned by the Government of the Canary Islands, which, according to the author, makes visible "the organization and order of the plot that existed in the theft of minors in the islands" during the Franco regime.
