Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote closed the first round of the Women's Division of Honor Gold with a convincing 30-22 victory against Lanzarote-Puerto del Carmen in the island derby.
In a match full of intensity and some incidents, the leaders of the category demonstrated why they dominate the competition, adding their ninth consecutive victory and extending their advantage as first classified.
The derby began with Ingrid Roger opening the scoring and showing Zonzamas' intentions. While Puerto del Carmen suffered inaccuracies in attack, the locals took advantage of their strong defense and an inspired start to go 6-1 up in the 8th minute, forcing the visiting coach to call a timeout. Puerto's reaction came with an outside goal from Tati Masseu (the match's top scorer with 7 goals), closing the gap to 7-4 in the 11th minute.
However, Zonzamas quickly regained control, led by Mireia Torras in directing the attack. In the 17th minute, Las Batateras extended their lead to 11-5. Although Puerto tried to close the gap after taking advantage of an exclusion of Agustina López, Valentina Menucci's saves in goal and an impenetrable defense were decisive in stopping any comeback attempt. The first half ended with a goal from Fernanda Insfrán on the buzzer, leaving the score at a clear 17-8.
In the second half, Puerto tried to get back into the game with two consecutive goals from Masseu, but Zonzamas maintained a comfortable lead, thanks to Ana Martín's security in goal and an effective attack led by Gleinys Reyes (the top local scorer with 9 goals). The Batateras' dominance continued, reaching the 20th minute with a resounding 28-19, although the match had to be stopped momentarily after a blow suffered by Brenda Torres, from Puerto del Carmen.
The visiting team took advantage of a brief offensive jam from Zonzamas to reduce the difference in the final minutes, but never managed to threaten the local victory. Finally, the score was 30-22, sealing an exceptional first round for Zonzamas, who leads the table with authority.
In the ranks of Tías, after the clash with the leaders, now is the time to continue thinking about the objective of the season, the permanence, which they should begin to confirm next week against Pereda in the Municipal of Tías. For its part, the Batateras team will receive Solimusic Carballal, penultimate classified in the Category.
